Pre-Season Test Review

Season 5 officially got underway at Yas Marina Circuit this weekend. Splitting the testing over 2 days and utilising the South and then the full F1 GPcircuit, drivers certainly had ample time to get used to their car’s capabilities.

Flying in from Denmark was 15 year old Cato Poulsen. Having some good karting experience under his belt and a little single seater racing he was certain to impress on the wide open Yas Marina Circut, and impress he did. Without any incidents on track and making steady progress Cato eventually posted the fastest lap of the weekend,at 02:16.592.

Making his return was Emirati driver Haytham Sultan. Haytham had got up to speed back in Season 2 with podiums and fastest laps but unfortunately had to stop due to a lack of budget. But with new sponsors on board for this season Haytham had a great return trading fastest laps with Poulsen in the last session of the weekend, finally posting a 2:16.848.

Giulio Peroni, who has just been enrolled into the new GulfSport Rising Star program (more details to follow on that) got off to a difficult start to the weekend with a small mistake in session one. This lead to Peroni understeering into the Tecpro barrier at the last turn. But not to be deterred by this he was back out for session two and making good progress, although maybe just a touch slower through that turn after his incident in the previous session.

Andy Pardoe was present to coach the drivers before and after every session. In fact more time is spent in the “Pardoe Clinic” than on track, but Andy keeps surgery very concise and makes sure drivers are only focussing on what they need to do in order to start putting together that elusive perfect lap!

Flying in from Saudi was Omar Gazzaz. Despite having the least experience of all our drivers, Omar put in a great performance. Particularly at the end of day one when he was only 1.423 seconds off Haytham Sultan who set the pace for the first session on the GP circuit.

Two drivers were not unable to attend the test that will be at the first race in two weeks and with the last of the seven seats available just being finalised it promises to be a close season. When all 7 events, 28 practise sessions and 14 races are done who will be the champion? All we know is that the learning curve is steep but Formula Gulf is one of the best platforms to get up that curve….
