Round 11/12 Preview

by Martin on March 15, 2016

The region’s best single seater race drivers resume battle at the fabulous Yas Marina Circuit this weekend in the penultimate event of the 2015/16 Formula Gulf season. They will take to the ultra fast 3.13kms North Circuit whose lap record was set by Joe Ghanem in 2012 at 1:10.435 at an average speed in excess of 163kph!

Sponsored by GP2 team Campos Racing and Gulf Oil International this driver development series provides an elite group of young racers with valuable winter track time and world-class driver coaching from Dubai’s GulfSport Racing team.

Leading the championship points table is 16 year old Danish driver Cato Poulsen who is planning to compete in a Formula 4 Championship in 2016. The battle for this season’s Vice Champion position, which is rewarded with a VIP weekend with the Gulf Oil sponsored Aston Martin Racing team at Le Mans, is between Omar Gazzaz (Saudi Arabia) and Giulio Peroni (Italy) both of whom are enjoying their first season of car racing. Campos Racing’s 17 year old Gulhuseyn (Quka) Abdullayev, fresh from some useful F3 testing in Spain will be flying in from Istanbul again determined to carry on his winning streak having won Round 10 in Dubai last month.

However, both Cato and Quka may have competition from 2013/14 Formula Gulf Vice Champion Saeed Bintouq (UAE) who plans to contest the last four rounds. Saeed, who has been competing in the FIA Middle East Rally Championship had tied on points with Tom Bale two seasons ago but lost the Championship title on countback (most wins). Unfortunately, a late entry from Argentinian F4 racer Baltazar Leguizamon has been thwarted by lengthy visa requirements.

The 2016/17 Formula Gulf champion wins an F3 test in Spain with GulfSport’s partner, Campos Racing whose 2015 GP2 team driver Rio Haryanto (Indonesia) is now racing for Manor Racing in Formula One this season.

Racing starts at 2pm on Friday 18th March at the Yas Marina Circuit.
